La Historia
Family-run. Flavor obsessed.
El Punto Sandwichera has been family-owned and operated in Allentown, Pennsylvania since 2003. Over twenty years, three generations have stood behind the same flat-top griddle on West Tilghman Street, hand-pressing the same Italian bread, layering the same fresh meats, and pouring the same fresh-fruit juices. This is how it started, how it kept going, and why people drive in from across the Lehigh Valley to eat here.
How did El Punto start?
El Punto opened on West Tilghman Street in 2003 as a small family-run sandwichera bringing Puerto Rican food to Allentown. In the early 2000s, Allentown's Hispanic community was growing fast, but there was almost nowhere in Center City to get an authentic tripleta the way it's served back home in Guayama or San Juan. The family saw the gap and opened the shop. The first few years were word-of-mouth, neighbor by neighbor, sandwich by sandwich. By the late 2000s, the Tripleta had become a Lehigh Valley staple.
What kind of bread does El Punto use?
El Punto presses every sandwich on warm Italian bread, sliced thick and griddled on the flat top. A soft Italian roll, warmed and lightly pressed, gives the meats and sauces a sturdy carrier without dominating the bite. The crust crisps just enough on the flat top; the interior soaks up the mayoketchup and stays warm to the last bite. That bread choice is what makes an El Punto sandwich travel well and hold together — even when you split it in half.
Who eats at El Punto?
Allentown regulars, Lehigh Valley families, and travelers who drive 25+ minutes for a Mar y Tierra. The shop sits 0.7 miles from PPL Center in Center City Allentown. On weeknights it's downtown workers and families. On weekends it's neighbors from Bethlehem, Easton, Reading, Whitehall, and Quakertown — anyone within a 20-mile radius willing to drive for what reviewers call the “best Cuban sandwich anywhere around here.”
What hasn't changed since 2003?
The recipes, the family in the kitchen, and the bread. The Tripleta we serve today uses the same combination of chicken, pernil, and ham as it did in 2003. The Italian bread still comes warm off the flat top with the same press the family has used since day one. The fresh juices (parcha, piña, guanábana, limonada) are still squeezed in-house every morning. The MayoKetchup is mixed by hand. The Mal y Tierra is still surf-and-turf the way the family first put it together. 23 years and counting.
